Derek finished the 2001 season fifth in all-purpose yards with 2619, averaging 187.1 yards a game. He registered the longest TD reception in Brigade history with a 48 yarder and returned 56 kickoffs for 1200 yards and four scores.

Derek spent four weeks on the Buffalo destroyers(AFL) Practice Squad before deciding to return to the Brigade in 2002.

In 2002 Derek became a two way player. He had 24 tackles, two interceptions and seven breakups on defense. He also ran back 18 kicks for 295 yards and a touchdown.
